How to use neuroscience to get more time and money
In the technology-driven world we live in, it’s often hard to tune out the distractions that surround us. Whether it’s bingeing on Netflix, scrolling Instagram for hours or Snapchatting our every move, our brains often lose focus and slip away, sometimes for way longer than we choose to admit. With technology offering us the world at our fingertips, how can we take a step back and become more focused and productive? How can we channel our inner strength to take back control of our time, and get ourselves more money in the process?
According to Louise Taylor, a big part of it is – you guessed it – neuroscience.
Louise Taylor is an author, speaker, neuro-strategist and corporate consultant with over twenty-five years experience in the field of high performance. An intuitive forward thinker, Louise is a coach and speaker assisting people in activating their ‘individual and collective clarity, confidence and commercial creativity - through her company Unbridled.

Louise believes there’s a genius in all of us, but there’s a few key factors to unlock the greatness within. And neuroscience plays an important part.
I had the pleasure of talking to Louise about what kind of neuroscience-based tools can help someone save more time and money, and also the daily behaviours we’re all guilty of that might support or inhibit our goals. Having little knowledge on cognitive functioning and how the brain works, my chat with Louise had me questioning certain behaviours of my own, that might be hindering me from exercising my full cognitive potential. I hope her words bring you a similar outcome – a curiosity about what drives us, a desire to understand ourselves, and how we can use these concepts to flourish emotionally and financially.
“Your internal money strategy kind of guides your behaviour,” Louise says.
“We all have a subconscious thermostat on how much money we can have to be successful. Emotions are intrinsically linked to money based on family values , environment, belief systems we have learned and the experiences we’ve had. Recognising where your thermostat is at is the first key to changing your internal money strategy.”
Basically, it’s about rewiring our brains to emotionally attach to our desired money goal the positive outcomes of increasing our wealth. We all have a strategy to make money (what have you done to make money in the past?), and many of us have a dollar amount we desire to have or to earn in order to be successful or content. According to Louise, we all have this money mindset, curated over time from recognising “where you are, where you’ve been and the belief systems around you”.
It all comes under the banner of having an entrepreneurial mindset.
“I like to call it “Collateral Courage” - meaning that when you face things that are difficult, you know how to quickly shift the emotions, shift the thought process and lift to a new emotional outcome or idea. I believe we have a huge capacity to draw new ideas and solutions out of ourselves – but we need the right tools to do so.” she says.
At a young age, Louise was curious about human behaviour. Possibly because at 3 her parents discovered she had next to no sight in one eye. At age twelve, Louise was avidly reading books that shaped her future career. Like Mans Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, and Creative Living for Today (Psychocybernetics) by Maxwell Maltz. This learning kick-started Louise’s lifelong journey to learn from thousands of experts, and to recognise what she and others had inside themselves, and help people uncover and achieve emotional and financial freedom.
“The more we learn – the more we realise that that point of ‘flow’ in performance is a merging of science, spirituality (our higher self) and physiology. I fully believe that we have an inner genius inside [all] of us, and we can tap into it. Because times have changed, anybody can create his or her own income…anybody…[but] imagination is a massive key.
“Michelangelo said ‘I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free’ and that’s kind of my philosophy on what I do. And so, I think that people recognising what they are capable of within [himself or herself] is really important right now."
Basically, she says, it’s about “keeping it real”.
“In these economic times – thinking, feeling and behaving like an ‘entrepreneur’ is a crucial skill. It's expected that millennials will have 15-20 jobs over the course of their working lives. This means that by default they need to learn to be creative. Large companies can no longer use ‘dinasour’ thinking to solve problems. They must access and tap into every individual within the organisation – and think of their employees as ‘brains’ rather than with a hierarchical attitude.
Gaining more time and money through neuroscience is all about manipulating, or rewiring, our pathways to what we want them to be. And it’s not as hard as you think.
“The way we think about our work and the way we look at our identity… all the fears and doubts that go through people’s minds can be shifted when they tap into the deeper parts of ourselves – the place of higher wisdom. "A lot of the patterns of thinking are just a pathway in our brain; you can actually interrupt the pathway and make new ones, [even though] the brain will try to run down known pathways at first.
To develop your inner entrepreneur – its important to recognise that we need to look at increasing income from 4 perspectives:
1. Creative – How can I create more opportunities, products or services that meet the market need?
2. Focus and Facts – What is the end goal. What is my key focus area and how can I stay the course.
3. Emotional – What emotions are driving behaviour and what are the emotions and behaviours that someone with financial success displays?
4. Execution – How can I practically make a change? Am I following through and completing?
It’s important to have people around you to help or strengthen those areas. Most people lean towards 2 preferred areas of thinking – and entreprneurs are often creative and relational – but can sometimes lack strength in processing things from a financial or ‘left brain’ perspective.
It sounds complicated, and at times often impossible, to be motivated to change our inner thinking. With everything going on around us, where do we find the time to completely rewire our mindset? Where do we even start?
This is where Louise comes in. Her company, Unbridled, has had great success in helping teams to make better decisions, create new market opportunities and overcome the hidden emotional barriers that are impacting engagement, productivity and retention.
A large part of it is neuroscience, which has proven that "clarity, identity and everyday habits are key to living a happy and purpose filled life".
Let’s zone in on these everyday habits. Surely we’re all guilty of daily behaviours that don’t benefit our overall wellbeing.
So what kinds of habits are affecting our time management in a positive, or negative, way?
“Having clarity and purpose” is extremely important, Louise says.
“One of the reasons why people procrastinate and waste time is because they have confusion and doubt.”
She says it’s about “really making sure that what you’re doing is aligned with your passion”; otherwise you’ll lose a lot of time (and probably money in the long run, too).
“Anytime we look at our phones, our brains get fatigued. If we don’t choose to spend our time focused on the most important ‘rocks’ or big goals that matter – then we will default into spending our time on other people’s agendas. We have to own our habits, and putting that in place is a discipline.”
She uses the phrase ‘Take back your morning’, meaning that whether it’s meditation, praying, reading, or whatever you need to do for yourself, it’s about setting your intentions and “deciding how you’re going to spend your time.”
This part of the conversation with Louise really got me thinking. How much more productive could I be on a daily basis, if I set goals and intentions every morning? If I take back my mornings, how much more time and money would I be gaining?
This is where scheduling plays an important part. Louise believes “writing down what you want moves your brain toward it faster”. Another trick is to schedule the night before, so you already know what needs doing when you wake up.
We all have the same hours in a day, but it’s about the energy we put into those hours that will increase our productivity overall.
You might be thinking, I already know all of this, I’ve heard it before, I’ve tried and tried and tried…
But why can’t we reach our full potential? Maybe all we need is a little push from someone with an abundance of experience in the field of cognitive thinking.
